California: Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge
Tule Lake Information:
The Tule Lake in California, is part of a larger basin, the expanse of which is said to once be the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, known in recent times as the Tulare Lake Basin. Subsequently, that large basin was drained by modern farmers for agriculture purposes. Still, this larger basin includes Klamath Basin to the north in Oregon and several lakes just south of Klamath in northern California. It has been designated a national wildlife refuge and as such provides a location for migrating birds to stop, find food and rest from their long migratory journey either north or south bound. Thus, these area of northern California and southern Oregon are also called a flyway for migrating birds, specifically the
Pacific Flyway.
Furthermore, from what I understand, this area which is abundant with lakes has a large bird population year round. Too, one of the lakes nearby is a nesting location for both bald eagles and golden eagles.
However, this large Tulare basin, in the distant past, was part of the larger so called ancient Lake Corcoran, which in previous times, expanded to fill the entire Central Valley of California. However, even prior to that, Lake Corcoran, was only a small part of the even larger
Great South Lake, known by the earliest of the indigenous people as Scawaneu Menuppek.
