Western half of the continent. Winters in western Texas, southern Arizona and New Mexico. Year round in coastal area of California.

Freshwater marsh, nearby fields.

Male is a large black bird with a yellow hood and white wing patches.

Female is smaller, has yellow eyebrow, body is brown with yellow throat and breast, belly is white with brown streaks. Immature similar to female and male acquires adult plumage by first spring.
