TheGeological Wonders, Waterways: Springs of Water Go Down Go Back
The Whittington Spring, Arkansas
The Whittingon Spring fountain water is not just a surface water fountain, but rather, this water is spring water from deep underground. Actually, there are two cold water springs that I have come to know about in the Hot Springs National Park:
1. Happy Hollow Spring Fountain (34.518790, -93.049037). pH: 4.25 pH
2. Whittington Spring Fountain (34.515041, -93.069419). pH: 7.4 pH
Yes, there is a huge difference between these two spings when it comes to their pH level. The reason for this difference, states a report from the Arkansas Department of Health is: "The water from Happy Hollow spring is recent recharge water (less than 20 years old) whereas the water from Whittington Spring is 6000 years old and is substantially more mineralized than Happy Hollow spring."
The following is an excerpt from the National Park web site: www.nps.gov "These two fountains dispense water from cold springs, whose sources are different from the hot springs. Whittington Spring flows out of West Mountain, and Happy Hollow Spring flows out of North Mountain. The Arkansas Department of health requires formal treatment of these springs, and ozone filtration systems are used because they have been deemed the least intrusive of the acceptable methods. Very little ozone remains in the water by the time it reaches the spigot. There is no treated taste."

Journey On, Day 56
Overnighting in a parking lot
Awake to another warm day, dress in my fall blues and begin my drive into the old down town towards the national park. I stop first at a ff-mart for a cup of coffee and then next at the Whittington Avenue Spring to fill my water bottles.
Next, I drive to Central Avenue and enter the same parking structure that I have used for many years. Once I am parked, I step outside, walk to the of the jammer, open the rear lift door and begin readying my day pack for today′s visit to the hot springs. Methinks, this is the second time this year that I have come here to soak in the hot water, the first being in February after my Journey East to Florida for the purchase of my current vehicle.
