The Deschutes River is located in central Oregon and is a major tributary of the Columbia River. The river provides much of the drainage from the eastern side of the Cascade Mountain Range in Oregon by gathering water from many of the smaller tributaries that descend from the drier, eastern side descending off of the mountains.
The Deschutes River has for millennia provided the indigenous people an important route to and from the Columbia, and then in the 19th century for pioneers on the Oregon Trail.
This river flows mostly through arid and rugged terrain, and its valley provides a cultural heart for central Oregon. Today the river supplies water for irrigation and is popular in the summer for many activites including fishing, hiking and whitewater rafting.
