The Lava Butte cinder cone is located in central Oregon and can be found just off of US highway 97 a short distance south of Bend, Oregon.

This cinder cone is part of the Newberry Volcanic Area and connected to a system of smaller cinder cones on the northwest flank of the Newberry Volcano, which is a massive shield volcano that rises somewhat to the southeast.

The cinder cone is capped by a crater which extends about 60 feet (20 m) deep beneath its south rim, and 160 feet (50 m) deep from the 5,020-foot (1,530 m) summit on its north side.

From Bend, Oregon, drive south on US 97 to the Newberry National Volcanic Monument exit at Crawford Road (NF-9702) and turn right onto Crawford Road, and immediately turn right onto NF-100 and then immediately right again to continue on NF-100.

NF-100 will take you directly to the top of Lava Butte where there is a parking lot and Lava Butte Lookout.

Awake to the twilight, the moon is directly overhead, starting the last quarter and the temperature, although being in the lower forties, again feels like it is near freezing. However, it is sunny and clear this morning, so this changes my supposition that the fog yesterday was the cause of the freezing feeling. The sun will rise in the next few minutes as I gather my things to walk to the shower house for a hot shower. Upon returning to the jammer, I see from the tops of the trees, that the sun has risen and upon arriving back at the jammer, I climb into the rear, sit at my desk and initiate my journal entry for this morinng.

After I have put my computer away, I then begin to pack out of this state park, after which, I drive across the Deschutes River bridge, then turn north on US 97, past Lava Butte, and drive to Bend where I turn into the w-mart for coffee, com and computer.
