Multnomah Falls
Multnomah Falls is on of the many waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge. This one is located at Multnomah Creek from IH 84, exit 31 both directions. The exit leads to a parking lot in the middle of the interstate and has a tunnel under the westbound lanes of the interstate leading to to the Lodge and waterfall.
The Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state of Oregon and drops from the Columbia Plateau down 620 feet over basalt cliffs. The waterfall spans two tiers in its drop to the river.
History
In the early twentieth century, Simon Benson, developed the land surrounding the falls, creating a pathway and a viewing bridge. The Multnomah Falls Lodge was built during 1925, and then the surrounding footpaths at the falls were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
The state of Oregon maintains a switchback trail that ascends to a talus slope 100 feet above the falls and then descends down to an observation deck that has an overlook from the edge of the falls.
The Multnomah Falls draws more than two million visitors every year, which makes it the most visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest area.
In an October 30, 1805 journal entry, from the journals recorded by explorers William Clark and Meriwether Lewis during their expedition through the Columbia River Gorge, there was a note written about the Multnomah Falls.
