Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area and the Uinta Mountains,
Petroglyph found throughout the Forest indicates that the First Wayfarers traveled and hunted here long before the arrival of Europeans.
The Arrival of the Whites
It was not until 1776 when the first white men took footsteps upon the land now know as Ashley National Forest; these Europeans were the Spanish explorers Dominques and Escalante.
However, it was not until the early 1800′s when this area was explored more thoroughly by General William Ashley who at the time was a fur company organizer looking for an outlet to the Gulf of Mexico so that he might transport his goods back to the buyers.
In the spring of 1825, General Ashley and his team began heading up the
Green River which is just one of the many waters in this Forested land. After passing through the Flaming Gorge, the local Indians convinced General Ashley to turn around and head back up the Uinta Mountains.
General Ashley explored much of the area where this national forest is now located and thus the reason for naming the forest the Ashley National.
