In the western side of this state the hills already haven risen from the eastern coastal plains now begin to rise up to the Appalachian highlands. These mountains come into the southern end from Connecticut as the Bershires Mountains and into the northern end from New York as the Taconic mountains.
Geologically and physically, the Bershires are the southern continuation of the Green Mountains of Vermont with the only difference from the Greens in that the Bershires have lower average elevations. The Berkshires continue further southward into Connecticut where they are called Litchfield Hills.
