Cascade Range
The Cascade Range or more commonly called The Cascades is a North American Pacific Coast Region mountain range, extending from southeastern British Columbia through eastern Washington, eastern Oregon and into Northern California.
The Cascade Range includes the volcanic mountains in southeast British Columbia, referred to as the
Canadian Cascades, the non-volcanic mountains in north Washington known as the North Cascades, and the notable long series of volcanoes known as the High Cascades from southeast
Washington through
Oregon to north
California.
The highest peak in the Cascade Range is
Mount Rainier, with an elevation of 14,411 (4,392 m) and located in Washington about fifty miles southeast of Seattle.
North Cascades
The Skagit Range of the North Cascades in British Columbia are most notable for their dramatic scenery and challenging mountaineering, resulting from their steep, rugged topography, very similar to the
Washington North Cascades in the adjoining section just south.
While most of the peaks are under 10,000 feet (3,000 m) in elevation, the low valleys provide great local relief, often over 6,000 feet (1,800 m). The summits of the rest of the Canadian Cascades are not glaciated in the same way and feature rock horns rising from plateau-like uplands, with the Manning Park and Cathedral Park areas known for their extensive alpine meadows, as is also the case with the eastern flank of the US portion of the range.
Canadian Cascades
The Canadian Cascades, also called the Canadian Cascade Arc, is the Canadian segment of the North American Cascade Volcanic Arc. Located entirely within the Canadian province of British Columbia, it extends from the Canadian
Coastal Ranges in the north, south to the
North Cascades in Washington, specifically, the southern end of the Canadian Cascades begin at the Canada–United States border.
However, the specific boundaries of the northern end are not precisely known because the geology in this part of the volcanic arc is poorly understood. It is widely accepted by geologists that the Canadian Cascade Arc extends through the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains. However, others have expressed concern that the volcanic arc possibly extends further north into the Kitimat Ranges, another subdivision of the Coast Mountains, and even as far north as Haida Gwaii (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands).
There are no active volcanoes in BC like those in the US Cascades and are the north end of largely volcanic mountains ranges which extend south to California.
