The Warrior Rock Light Go Down Go Back
Warrior Rock Light
The Warrior Rock light is located on the east side of the north end of Sauvie Island, Oregon which light is situated inland at mile point 87.2 on the Columbia river not far from Portland.
Land Access:
From IH 405 in Portland, Oregon, take exit 3 to US 30 (NW St Helens Road) and drive north along the Willamette river about nine and a quarter miles. On the last section of this drive, you will see the Sauvie Island bridge crossing over the Multnomah channel. Upon arriving at the intersection of NW Sauvie Island Road, turn right and cross the bridge. Continue north on NW Sauvie Island road 2.15 miles to NW Reeder Road, turn right and continue on NW Reeder Road to the end where you will find the Warrior Rock Light trailhead. River Access:
From the boat ramp in St Helens Marina (45.8674300, -122.7986284), travel upriver (south) until you come to Multnomah channel and Warrior Point on the north end of Sauvie Island. Keep to the east of Warrior Point and continue along the east shore of Sauvie Island and you will begin to see sand beaches. At the end of the sand beaches is Warrior Rock Lighthouse.
History:
In 1877, there was navigational needs near Sauvie Island due to a bedrock reef which projects into the Columbia river, the US Lighthouse Board has a small red post lantern placed at Warrior Rock. In 1888, the US congress authorized a lighthouse on the site and in 1889 a small wood frame structure atop a sandstone base was constructed with a living quarter below and an oil lamp beacon light with lens on top.
In 1930, the wooden house was replaced with a 28 foot tall concrete tower on the original sandstone foundation.
The lighthouse presently operates with an automated beacon and bell. The exterior of the site is open to the public, and can be visited by a short boat ride from St. Helens, or a three-mile hike from the north end of Reeder Road at the Warrior Rock Light trailhead.
