THE LIGHTHOUSES
The Maine Lights

The Lights of Maine Go Down Go Back
The Portland Head Light, first lit in 1791, is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. The state has fifty-seven active lights, two of which are maintained as private aids. The state has nine lights still standing but now inactive and three that have been destroyed. At two light stations, there were twin towers but at both of these stations only one of each pair survives as active.
The Portland Head Light, first lit in 1791, is the oldest light in the state and was the first US lighthouse completed after independence from Britain. The last lighthouse to be lit in the state, lit in 1910, the second Whitlocks Mill Light, is also the most northerly light in the state and therefore on the US Atlantic Coast. The West Quoddy Head Light sits on the easternmost point of the continental United States. The tallest tower is that of Boon Island Light at 137 feet (42 m), though the Seguin Light focal plane, at 180 feet (55 m), is the highest above sea level in the state.
The second oldest of Maine′s coastal lighthouses was Sequin Light on Sequin Island, built in 1795 but was replaced in 1857 with the current light.
Maine Lighthouses
Sixty-five lighthouses still standing on the coast of Maine cover about five thousand miles of Maine coastline which makes Maine known as the lighthouse state.
The list of lighthouses include:
