Geology
Goose Lake is a large alkaline lake in the Goose Lake Valley, and like many other lakes in the Great Basin, it is a pluvial lake resulting in accumulation of water in a basin.
Goose Lake is the center of a semi-closed drainage basin. Its watershed is normally endorheic, but during times of high water levels caused by heavy rain and or snow melt, there is an outflow into the Pit River, which is a tributary of the Sacramento River.
Goose Lake has been defined by the government Geological Survey as part of the Sacramento's watershed, but later redefined Goose Lake as a closed basin which it is some ninety-nine percent of the time.
Goose Lake is part of a geological trough which runs from Oregon southward through the Walker Lane. The Walker Lane is roughly aligned with the Nevada-California state line and includes Pyramid Lake, Walker Lake,
Owens Valley,
Mono Lake, and
Death Valley.
The
Inland Desert route on US 395 in part transverses this geological trough.
Ancient Steps:
Hadoram and his sons were the first to settle in this region and did so along the banks of
Ta-Maschilamek Menuppek, (Great Salmon Lake.) Later, as the lake continued to drain through what these ancient people called,
Taiachquoan Ju Eluwantowit, (Bridge from God) and the waters began to recede, the sons of Hadoram would move their camp inland to follow the shoreline.

Onsite:
If you like isolation, then this is a choice location as it is located in the high desert on the eastern side of the state of Oregon, a region with few people.
The remote location of both the lake and the state park campground makes camping reservations unnecessary, as this is one of the least known and used state park campground in Oregon.
The mountains at the north end of the lake are part of the Fremont National Forest, and the south end of the lake is adjacent to Modoc National Forest lands. Most of the valley property around the lake is privately owned agricultural land, except for the area of Goose Lake State Recreation Area on the eastern part of the lake in Oregon.
Wildlife
Migratory wildlife are usually abundant in spring and early summer during peak stream runoff and include
Canada goose,
western grebe,
Clarks grebe,
gadwall,
canvasback,
wood duck,
pelican,
cinnamon teal, and many more. Wading birds include
sandhill crane and others. Shore birds include
American avocet,
snowy plovers, and others. A large variety of other birds frequent the park throughout the year.
Mule deer frequent the park in summer to feed on fruit from an old orchard in the campground.
Nearby:
Nearby is Hart Mountain wildlife refuge and to the east are the Warner Mountains with peaks 8,500 feet high.
Also, in northeast California are the Modoc National forest with obsidian lava beds, including
Lava Beds National Monument, where in is located
Indian Well campground.

Goose Lake State Park, #16
Arrived yesterday and found the campground nearly empty, so I parked in the same location that I did in September 2019, that is in space # 16, primarily because the space has a lot of nice shade throughout the day.

Goose Lake State Park, #16
Awake, drive to the w-mart, go in for coffee, com and computer and stay here all morning working on cropping photos, updating my journal, and uploading files to my web site. I am finally glad to have full access to my control panel and have use of the file manager again. Then, in the afternoon, I create another post on social media so my friends can see where I have been.
After posting, I resume the journey south, beginning Part Four and now along the western edge of the
Great Basin desert. From Klamath Fall, Oregon, I drive west on SR 140 to Lakeview, Oregon where I plan on camping at Goose Lake state park tonight. I do not stop in Lakeview, but turn south on US 395 to continue my travel of this highway, which I have given the name
Inland Desert Route.
I set up in space # 16 which has electric and water, plug in and then begin cooking my Repast. When it is done, I carry everything into the jammer and then close the windows and doors because there are some insects here.
