Cottonwood Campground, Canyon de Chelly NM
The campground is located next to the Thunderbird Lodge in the Canyon de Chelly National Monument.
Access to the national monument is from US 191, and upon arriving in Chinle, Arizona, turn east onto Indian Route 7 and driving three miles to the entrance of the National Monumnent. When you see the sign Thunderbird Lodge → Historic Trading Post, then turn right and the campground is on the right in less than one half mile.

Navajo Nation Land
The national monument and the campground are contained fully within the Navajo Nation land. All concessions, tour guides, camping and other commercial operations are controlled and run by the Navajo Nation.

The Amenities
Onsite:
Canyon de Chelly National Monument: Ancient cliff dwellers in numerous locations, with a road providing a driving tour atop the canyon.
Tours in the canyon are available but a native guide must be hired for all tours going into the canyon.
Canyon de Chelly: This is one of the most amazing canyons in the four-corners region.
White House Ruins: This is probably the most famous of all the ruins in Canyon de Chelly National Monument. It is called the White House because it is one of the only ancient ruin that still has the white paint on the outer walls.
Spider Rock: Spider Woman is an important deity in Navajo mythology and it was she who taught the People how to weave. This place is sacred to the Navajo and they believe there is purity and strength here.

The Camping
General Information:
All sites are first come, first serve, no reservations.
No hookups are available and there are no showers.
Limited services are available during winter months.
Fees:
93 campsites $20.00 per night
2 group tent sites, $50.00 per night
RV dump station, $5.00 per use
Campground Includes:
Grill, parking space, picnic table
3 Rest rooms with sinks and flush toilets
A RV dump station is located in Loop 1

I awake at dawn but pull the pillow over my eyes to sleep another hour. Then, starting without breakfast, I drive to the Visitor's Center of Canyon de Chelly National Monument where I buy the park embroidered patch.
