A state heritage site in John Day six miles west, one that is filled with a collection of historic artifacts from the days when the building was a gold mining era trading post, herbal apothecary practice, and Chinese community center.
Build in 1866, the small building is now preserved as a museum and is open daily fro May to October. To visit the museum, sign up for a free ranger led tour at the nearby visitors center. There are interpretive displays and a gift shop at the visitors center.
John Day Fossil Beds
Thirty five miles west of the campground is the John Day Fossil Beds national monument. There are three units of this monument, the Sheep Rock unit, Clarno unit, and the Painted Hills unit.
Other area highlights include the Sumpter Valley Dredge and Frenchglen loop.
