The Lava Flow Campground, Idaho

The Campsite
Lava Flow Campground
The campground is located between Arco, Idaho and Carey, Idaho on US 20/26/93. Eighteen miles southwest of Arco, Idaho or 24 mile northeast of Carey, Idaho. The campground is just inside the entrance of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.

Coordinates: 43.461000, -113.557000

Elevation: 5,900 feet

Camping on the Moon
Lava Flow campground is one of the most interesting camping experiences because the campground is set in the middle of a large basalt lava flow. In fact, some of the sites are hidden behind and beneath large jagged heaps of lava.

The Amenities
Onsite:
The visitors center has maps, information, exhibits, presentations, rest rooms and the Craters of the Moon Natural History Association bookstore. Open daily from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Summer Hours: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
There are many hikes throughout the national monument, some in lava tubes, caves and atop cinder cones. Bicycling is the best on the park roads.
The entire campground is black from the lava which make for superb night time star gazing.
Large Lava Flow
Camping in a lava flow is eerie to say the least. Too, being in such an isolated location, the campground overall is very quite, with one exception, there is a lot of noise coming from the highway when eighteen wheelers drive by climbing the hill.

Nearby:
EBR-1 National Historic Landmark is east on US 20-26
Further east is Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Teton National Park
Clarendon Hot Springs and Shoshone Ice caves are southwest.
