THE PHYLUM ANGIOSPERM
Core Angioserms

The Eudicotyledons, Clade-Order Level Information Go Down Go Up
Currently, in the phylum Angiosperm, there are eight classes, (see list on the previous page) which consist of three core-angiosperm, two early core-angiosperm and three basal-angiosperm.
The Core angiosperm, also referred to as the Mesangiospermae, encompasses the vast majority of flowering plants, excluding the basal angiosperms, which are considered the flowering plants with the earliest fossil records. The core-angiosperms
Previously Dicotyledonae
Previously, this Class in the phylum Angiosperm was called Dicotyledonae, often referred to as Casss Dicotyledon, and commonly referred to as the Dicots. The word Dicotyledon is from the Greek words di meaning two, and cotyledon meaning embryonic leaf.
However, in reconsidering the name Dicotylecona, most botanist have decided to change the name to Eudicotyledon, adding a prefix of Eu to the name, which prefix is the Greek word eu meaning true, so as to distinguish these angiosprem plants as core-angiosperm plants as separate from the others classes of angiosperm plants.
Eudicotyledons
The class Eudicotyledons, commonly referred to as eudicots, are flowering plants whose floral parts are in multiples of four or five, seeds typically contain two embryonic leaf (cotyledon) and leaves that are broad with a network of veins.
Eudicotyledons are the largest groups into which flowering plants are found, as well as the largest group of any other class in the plant kingdom. These are plants that produce seeds within an enclosure, and such enclosure is usually a fruit.
Numerous familiar plants are eudicots, including many common food plants, fruit bearing trees, and ornamental plants. Some common and familiar eudicots include members of the sunflower family such as the common dandelion, the forget-me-not, cabbage, apple, buttercup, maple, and macadamia.
Most leafy trees of mid-latitudes also belong to eudicots, with notable exceptions being magnolias and tulip trees which belong to magnoliids, as well as the Ginkgo biloba, which is not an angiosperm.
Clades of the Class Eudicotyledons
The subdivisions of Eudicots are still being debated but for now, there are three main groups which some call Clades and one Clade has three Divisions:
(1) Clade Pentapetalae
a. Division Asterids
b. Division Rosid (18 or more Orders, 140 Families, 70,000 Species)
c. Division Magnoliophyta
(2) Clade Paraphyletic (4 Orders, 15 Families, 6383 Species)
(3) Clade Gunnerales (1 Order, 2 Families, 65 Species)
The Clade Pentapetalae is a very large group of flowering plants with 39 orders. However, these orders are divided into two Super-Orders and five sub-clades.
The clades are next divided into orders. The clade-order division of the Class Eudicotyledon are currently as follow:
