THE CLASS EUDICOTYLEDON
Order Caryophyllales

The Order Caryophyllales Information Go Down Go Up
The order Caryophyllales is a diverse and heterogeneous order of flowering plants with members including cacti, carnations, beets, quinoa, spinach, amaranths, pigfaces and ice plants, oraches and saltbushes, goosefoots, sundews, Venus flytrap, tropical pitcher plants, Malabar spinach, bougainvilleas, four o'clock flowers, buckwheat, knotweeds, rhubarb, sorrels, purslanes, jojoba, and tamarisks. Many members are succulent, having fleshy stems or leaves.
The Betalain pigments are a group of red and yellow pigments found in this order, specifically in the core families, and these pigment replace blue-red anthocyanin pigments that are found in most other plants. The betalain pigment are most noticeable in the petals of flowers, but may color the fruit, leaves, stems and roots of plants that contain them.
This order consists of 38 families, 750 genera and about 12,000 species.

Kingdom: Plantea
Phylum: Angiosperm
Class: Eudicotyledon
Clade: Superasterids
Division Order: Asterids
Order: Caryophyllales
Family: Amaranthaceae
Genus: Atriplex
Atriples is a plant genus that belongs to the family Amaranthaceae, subfamily Chenopodioideae and which genus contains about 250 species, known by the common names of saltbush and orache (also spelled orach).
The genus is quite variable and widely distributed. It includes many desert and seashore plants and halophytes, as well as plants of moist environments. The generic name originated in Latin and refers to the edible oraches. The common name saltbush derives from the fact that the plants retain salt in their leaves and they are able to grow in areas affected by soil salination.
