AT in Massachussets
The Massachusetts section of the Appalachian Trail traverses about ninety miles through the western area of the state within the Berkshire region. The mountain footpath follows atop scenic ridgelines through expansive highlands, over distinctive summits and shrouded with dense forests with the highest state elevation at the northern end of the footpath. The trail in this state also includes some lush river walks through many shaded glens.
The Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts straddles the north-south route US 7 in the western area of the state, crossing once from the west in the south of the state, not far from Sheffield, MA but staying east of the highway for the remainder of the state.
The AT in Massachusetts has an elevation range from 650 feet to the high point of 3,491 atop
Mount Greylock where
Bascom Lodge was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1934-1938. On a clear day, a person atop Mount Greylock can see sweeping vies for 90 miles or more in every direction.
