This phylum consists of over 11,000 species 1 (2016) and all such species are found exclusively in aquatic environments.
The distinguishing feature of the Cnidaria is the cnidocytes, which are specialized cells that they use mainly for capturing prey. There are two basic body forms, swimming and sessile (stationary).

The class Scyphozoa includes the animals of the phylum Cnidaria, which are called the true jellyfish. These marine animals date back to the Paleozoic era.

Description
The black sea nettle, also known as the black jellyfish.
Habitat:
Range:
This species of jellyfish is found in the Pacific Ocean and ranges from southern Baja California northward to Monterey Bay, California.
The first identification of this species occurred in 1997, when a large group was found along the Pacific coast shoreline.
