THE ANIMAL KINGDOM
Phylum Annelida

The Annelida, Class Level Index Go Down Go Back
Phylum Annelida: estimated 22,000 species (2023). 17,000 (2016) 1
This phylum Annelinda, from Latin anellus meaning little ring is also know as the segmented worms and includes species such as ragworms, earthworms, leeches and marine worms known as polychaetes. Species in this phylum have metameric bodies, which bodies are divided into segments called annuli.
The annuli are covered with tiny hairs called setae, which help the worms move. Too, each segment contains parts of the worm′s excretory, circulartry, reproductive and nervous system. The only parts not segmented are the head and the rear of the body.
The Annelids are bilaterally symmetrical, triploblastic, coelomate, invertebrate organisms.

The Earthworms
(m3an-an-cli-oli-opi-2010-1228.1504) Earthworm in field next to my home in Oak Harbor, WA

Common Name: Earthworm, night crawlers
Conservation Status: LC
Description
The common earthworm is a large, reddish worm species and can reach upwards of 9 inches when extended. Except for he flattened posterior section, it has a cylindrical body which is about .4 inches in diameter with 120 to 170 segments.
Habitat:
The common earthworn is a very conspicuous and familiar earthworm species in garden and agricultural soils of the temperate zone, and unlike most other earthworms, is frequently seen on the surface. It is also used as the example earthworm for millions of biology students around the world, even in areas where the species does not exist.
Range:
The common earthworm is widely distributed around the world. In much of Europe, it is the largest naturally occurring species of earthworm

1
The number of species as listed is approximate as new species continue to be found. Some estimates of extant species are much higher.
