The family Cervidae, called Cervids are the ruminant mammals of which there are two sub-family groups: (1) the Cervinae, (chital, fallow deer, muntjac, red deer, rusa, sambar, and sika deer; (2) the Capreolinae, including the American elk, Eurasian elk, gray brocket, marsh deer, mule deer, pudu, red brocket, reindeer (caribou), taruca, water deer, Western roe deer, white-tailed deer and moose.
All male deer, (of all species except the Chinese water deer) and female reindeer grow and shed new antlers each year. This differs from permanently horned antelope, also in this order Artiodactyla, but in the family of Bovidae.
