The Owyhee River Canyon is in the Owyhee River, which is a tributary of the Snake River, and their confluence is near the town of Owyhee, Oregon located just inside the state border with Idaho.
The Owyhee River
The Owyhee river in Oregon flows in from Idaho into the southeast corner of Oregon, then northward to the west side of Whitehouse Butte, elevation 5010 feet, during which it forks at the West Little Owyhee and the North Fork Owyhee. Soon after, it passes west of the Owyhee Canyon overlook. Flowing now to the northwest, the Owyhee crosses US 95 at Rome, Oregon and continues northwest until it joins with the Crooked River. Their combined waters flow generally due north with Saddle Butte to the west standing at elation 5285 feet. After passing by Saddle Butte, the river course changes to a northeasterly direction and after another thirty miles of flow, arrives into the upper reaches of Lake Owyhee, and in another thirty miles of flow arrives at the Owyhee Dam, which is part of the BLM.
The water enters a circular top drain at the lakes surface and flows out below on the north side of the dam and continues flowing down the last thirty or so miles through the upper canyon to the Snake River near Owyhee, Oregon.
Outside of Oregon, the Owyhee River flows into the southwest corner of Idaho, forks again at the South Fork Owyhee, continues to the southeast, crosses into Nevada and flows through the Humboldt NF, then through Wild horses Reservoir and its source a short way to the south.
