Popoluca is a Nahuatl term for various Indigenous peoples of southeastern Veracruz and Oaxaca. Many of them, up to about 30,000 speak languages of the Mixe–Zoque family. Others speak the unrelated Mazatecan languages, in which case the name in English and Spanish is generally spelled Popoluca.
There are, in fact, two divisions of the various people who are considered to be speakers of the Popoluca languages in its various dialects.
Mixean (two populations)
Oluta Popoluca, also called Oltec is a endangered Mixe-Zoquean language of the Mixean branch now only spoken by a few elderly people in town of Oluta in southern Veracruz, Mexico. (17.9303285, -94.8963337) Numbers of remaining speakers of this language varies among several different census.
Sayula Popoluca, also called Sayultec is a Mixe language spoken by about 5,000 indigenous people in and around the town of Sayual de Alemán in the southern part of the state of Veracruz, Mexico. (17.8815454, -94.9585485)
Zoque (four populations)
San Andres Tuxtla, is a city in the south of the state of Veracruz, Mexico (18.4484010, -95.2124052) with a sizeable populations of indigenous Zoque speaking people. This city is located in a small valley with the San Martin Volcano towering above it. In the 16th century, the area belonged to the Santiago Tuxtla province.[4] In 1530 there was an eruption of the San Martín Volcano, which prompted the movement of people from Ixtlán to what is now the city of San Andrés Tuxtla, then called Tuzacoalco (land between the mountains).[4][5] The settlement was recognized in 1580 by the head of the Tlacotalpan, Tuztla and Cotaxtla region.
Sierra Popoluca, also known as Soteapanec or Soteapan Zoque is a developing language of the Zoquean branch with over 36,000 speakers, all of which live in the southern part of Veracruz, Mexico.
Texistepec Populuca, also known as Texistepec Zoque is a Mixe-Zoquean language, a sister language of the Sierra Popoluca spoken by about a hundred indigenous Popoluca people in and around the town of Texistepec in southern Veracruz, Mexico. (17.8941624, -94.8173081)
Zoque Popoluca is a branch of the Mixe-Zoquean language family indigenous to southern Mexico within the states of Veracruz, Chiapas, Oaxaca and Tabalso, with over 100,000 speakers.
Popolocan
Popolocan is not closely related to Popoluca but are instead part of two different branches of the Oto-Manguean languages.
Popolocan is an indigenous Mexican group of languages of the Pooplocan branch of the Oto-Manguean language family closely related to Mazatec which includes about 17,000 indigenous people in the state of Puebla, Mexico near Tehuacán. (18.4627401, -97.3928135) The Popolocan language is a Ixcatec language belonging to the Popolocan branch of the Oto-Manguean language family.
