Range
The Cassin′s is found in the rocky mountain states from British Columbia down through the continent to northern Mexico. Also, there is a small habit found in southern California.
Habitat
This finch lives in evergreen forest in the mountains up to about 10,000 feet. However, in the winter they my move to lower elevations. They feed heavily on seeds of pines and quaking aspen.
Description
The Cassin′s finch is a small songbird with a peaked head crest and a medium short notched tail. The bill are heavy, fairly long and straight sided. The wings are long and when perched, project farther down the tail than other finches.
Males are rosy pink overall with the most intense red on the crown. Females and immature are brown and white birds with crisp dark streaks on the chest and under parts. Both the male and female have streaked undertail coverts. Both also may have a thin white eyering.
