Fairly numerous but local in coveys on open arid mountains.

Wary. Whitish throat and cheek, outlined in black. Red bill, red legs. Flanks barred black and white. Shows chestnut on tail in flight.

Juvenile: Brown with barring and spotting with pink legs.
