A rock relief or rock-cut relief is a relief sculpture carved on solid rock such as a cliff, rather than a detached piece of stone. They are a category of rock art, and sometimes found in conjunction with rock-cut architecture.
Rock relief art have been made in many cultures, and were especially important in the art of the Ancient Near East. Rock relief art is generally fairly large, as they need to be in order to have an impact in the open air, having figures that are larger than life and sometime many multiples of life size.
Most ancient rock relief art is found in the eastern hemisphere, with the western hemisphere only having more modern examples. The gallery will look at some of the modern examples in this hemisphere.
