The National Road Information
National Road Description:
The National Road was the first major US highway that was built with federal funds, authorized by President Jefferson in 1806 to connect the Potomac river in Cumberland, Maryland with the Ohio River. Construction began in 1811, reaching the Ohio river by 1818, and eventually completing a roadpath to Vandalia, Illinois by 1839. The National Road served as a vital, historic artery for westward expansion for migration of settlers, it impacted commerce and it opened up the Mississippi River basis for US westward expansion.
The National Road became a major route for early automobile travel, and eventually became US Highway 40. Today, the old roadpath is largely followed by U.S. Route 40, with many sections designated as a scenic byway, with the communities and/or states preserving historic inns, markers, bridges and sections of roadpath.
The original road was built using surveys, right-of-way acquisition, grading, then installing masonry foundations and stone surfacing. Then, in the early 1900s, most of that original road was re-placed with a re-built roadpath composed of a concrete foundation with brick overlay.

Sunday, 19 April 2026, Terre Haute, Indiana.

Journey On™, Day 64
Yesterday, after finishing my drive across Illinois, I arrive in Terre Haute late in the day, locate a d-mart where I will overnight, and at the same time find the w-mart where I will spend a couple of days catching up on my journal writing. Too, after having my morning meal and coffee, I ready my self for the meeting which I will attend by connecting to online. I remain here in Terre Haute for another day and then in the early afternoon of Monday, 20 April 2026, I begin my drive on the National Road in Indiana.
Today′s drive begins on the US 40 four-lane divided highway which is anything but out of the ordinary until I see a sign directing the National Road traffic onto a side road. This is where I begin my photos on this day.

Upon seeing a railroad bridge next to US 40, I stopped to take a look. Notice the concrete in the bottom left of this photo, which is the conredte bridge side barrier of the US 40 bridge. It was crumbling and had exposed rebar hanging down over the side.

Upon arriving in Richmond, Indiana, I set my GPS app to find a d-mart where I can overnight and upon driving there, I esp a restaurant where I choose to eat my evening meal. It has a Mariachi band upstairs on the balcony. Both the food and the music here is pretty good.
