The
Close Approach of Planets
|
|
|
A close approach of Planets not only occurs between two planets, but a close approach can occur between any two or more celestial objects, which includes; the moon, planets, dwarf planets, stars, asteroids, comets, meteors, and more.
Furthermore, A close approach of any celestial object would always appear from the viewers perspective from there location and come to within a predetermined size circle of close proximity.
An Apparent Phenomenon
The occurrences of conjunctions and occultations, often called a close approach (closest approach) between celestial objects are all apparent phenomenon caused entirely from the viewers perspective (observational astronomy), as there is never any actual physical approach (physical astronomy) between the objects involved in space.
The precise moment when two celestial objects have reached their closest approach is called the
appulse. Many close approaches and the subsequent appulse, when the event involves two bright celestial objects are naked-eye events which often attract wide public interest for general observation.

Winter Solstice, Great Conjunction
Falcon State Park, space #68
The Days leading up to the Solstice:
Shortly before six this evening the sun arrives at the horizon and soon after disappears for the night. I photograph the event and not long after that, begin to photograph the great conjunction. Wow, are these two planets close now. With my unaided eye, Jupiter and Saturn look like they are together. However, with my camera and when I zoom into the planets, I can see that they are still a distance apart.

Conjunction: Saturn and Moon
Overnighting at rental property
For the last several days, it seems that each night, immediately after the desert sunglow begins to diminish there has been the occurrence of a blue glow and tonight it is very bright. I take photos of the sunglow, the blueglow (all new gallery), the conjunction and then just sit outside and enjoy the cool night air.
