A suspension bridge is a type of bridge in which the deck, or the load-bearing portion for traffic, is hung below suspension cables, usually with vertical suspenders. The suspension cables are normally strung between tower in a sweeping arch and the suspender cables rise from the deck to the suspension cables. Sometimes, the deck in the middle of the bridge is supported directly by the suspension cables. A suspension bridge allows for the deck to be level or to arch upward for additions clearance for water traffic underneath.
Suspension bridges do not need to have construction support falsework. The suspension cables continue past the towers to supports that are deck level and anchored to the ground on both side of the bridge. The roadway is supported by suspender cables, or sometimes rods, which are also called hangers.
