THE SALADO CULTURE
At Tonto Cliff Dwellers

The Tonto Cliff Dwellers Ruins, Arizona Go Down Go Up
Within the Superstition Mountains, high in the cliffs overlooking the wide Salt River below to the north, these stone stackers found a suitable niche to call home. This dwelling, built in the early 1300′s by Salado who moved from the more crowded valley plain to a higher location.

Archaeologists have found a variety of objects that form a clear image of this stone stackers life and culture. Their pottery was not only the most beautiful anywhere, but also very useful. These people were also proficient in weaving, creating close-coiled baskets, and intricately woven sandals from yucca and agave fibers. To help these people both function and survive in a desert environment, they made a variety of tools from bones.
