Ahwahnee
The Ahwahnee Hotel is a grand lodge on the floor of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, California, built by the Yosemite Park and Curry Company and opened for business in 1927 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
The Ahwahnee Lodge is a Y-shaped building with 97 guest rooms, parlors and suites, together with 24 cottages, each accented with original Native American designes.
The site for the lodge was chosen for its exposure to the sun, which allows for natural heating, and for its views of several Yosemite icons, including Glacier Point, Half Dome, and Yosemite Falls.
The Currys
David and Jennie Curry were previously schoolteachers and arrived in Yosemite Valley in 1899. The couple ran a tent camp in Yosemite valley and even though the trip to the camp took a a week each direction via horse and wagon from Merced, California, the Curry camp registered almost 300 guests in its first year.
The Curry Company went on to dominate the politics of the park for decades. Later, David wrote the Secretary of the Interior, Franklin Lane, in an effort to extend the tourist season of the park in order to expand his business. It was the opinion of the Currys that national parks were for recreational use, and the couple marketed the park with attractions like the Firefall.
When David Curry died in 1917, the management of Camp Curry was continued by his widow Jennie, then known as Mother Curry, who received help from her children, particularly her daughter Mary and Mary′s husband Donald Tresidder. The camp, now known as Curry Village, still exists today.
