The Belton Chalets are a group of historic railroad hotel buildings located along the railroad just south of the western entrance to Glacier National Park in the village of West Glacier, Montana. The chalet buildings were built by the Great Northern Railway during 1910-1911.
These chalets were only the first component of the Great Northern railroad program of creating a system of hotels, road, and trail construction within the national park. From one of the train stations, horse and motor coach tours connected to the other hotels and chalets that were all part of the plan of the Northern Railroad company.
Great Northern Railroad
Besides the train station, ultimately, the Great Northern railroad company built five buildings on the Belton Chalets site, including a dining hall and a hotel facility.
The Great Northern railway building program in Glacier, which included the Belton Chalet, Lake McDonald Lodge, Granite Park Chalet, Sperry Chalet, Two Medicine Store and others all featured a Swiss Chalet style of architectural. Some of the lodges were only accessible by trail and a total of nine such properties within the national park were constructed by the railroad to service tourists who arrived in Glacier on one of the Great Northern passenger trains.
