The campground is located on the Pedernales River at the Pedernales Falls. Access is from the east, take SH FM 3232 north from US 390 north about ten miles to the park entrance. Access from the west in Johnston City, take SH FM 2766 east from US 390 to the park entrance. Once arriving at the park entrance, turn north and drive about another four miles to arrive at the park headquarters and acquire an entrance permit.

The Pedernales river is a clear spring fed river that flows gently down sloping limestone which creates the falls that are within the state park.

Quite pools that call for the anglers to fish, trails through tree-shaded hills draw bikers, hikers and horse riders.

Birders come to see the endangered golden-cheeked warble in the spring as well as year-round to see the indigenous rufous-crowned sparrow. The number of varieties is astounding which include the rainbow colored painted bunting.

Johnson City is the childhood home of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and the Lynden B. Johnson National Historical Park. To the west of Johnson City, about fourteen miles is the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and National Historical Park Site, LBJ Ranch District.

Daily entrance fee is in addition to the camping fee.

Two Restroom and Shower houses, RV dump station, trash dumpsters, equestrian camping area, youth camping area, trails, beach area, swimming, tubing and wading.

There is also a Star theater for star watching and a bird blind and butterfly garden.

I had driven into the state park yesterday from Kyle, Texas, after zooming to the weekend meeting in Harlingen, Texas. Too, I had already registered online for three nights of camping. So, when I did arrive, first on my addenda was to get into some much needed hot water.

When that was done, I set up my camp and began cooking my supper, a large wild caught tuna steak, grilled to perfectly done and a medially of fresh baked organic vegetables. I ended up having to eat the meal after dark but that was not a problem, just that, I was not able to chop up some of the garlic and ginger that I like to add to my food.

This morning, when I rise, I grab my shower bag and walk to the shower house for another soak in the hot water. This shower is steamy hot, which I do so love. Returning to the jammer, I next prepare my morning hot drinks and Daystart, after which I climb in and spend a relaxing day pounding keys.

During the late morning, several birds come into my campsite, one Pine Siskin lands on the concrete at the base of the water spigot and licks up water from the small holes.

At midday, I step out and take some photos of the campsite as well as the shower house.

At three in the afternoon, when it has achieved the heat of the day, I step out, get out my kitchen and begin a second round of baked fish and vegetables.

The sunset comes ever so early at this time of the year with the daytime being about ten hours long. When the sun had set, I look up in the western sky and see a Crescent Moon near to conjunction with Venus.

I awake just before sunrise, drive to Bastrop state park where I go to the facilities and take a hot shower. Then, I drive the seventy or so miles to Pedernales Falls state park and go directly to the bird blind. The hosts have already arrived but I am the first to sign the log book today.

The number of new birds I am able to see here amazes me and I stay until noon before packing out.
