Information:
Dirty Devil River
A tributary of the Colorado River, it flows from the confluence of the Fremont River and Muddy Creek downstream about eighty miles to the Colorado. During the course of river, it flows generally south through a 2000 foot deep canyon, of which the lower twenty miles are in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
When the Dirty Devil disembogues into the Colorado River, it is then submerged beneath Lake Powell. The canyon carved by the Dirty Devil River is seldom visited due to it being an especially isolated region.
Named by the Powell Geographic Expedition, which was led by John Wesley Powell in 1869, the name Dirty Devil was chosen because of the extreme salinity and turbidity of the water of this river near its mouth. Later, Powell contrasted it with a much cleaner stream in the Grand Canyon which he named the Bright Angel Creek.
The amount of salt that the Dirty Devil contributes to the Colorado River is about 150,000 tons each year.
