Luckenbach, Texas is to paraphrase by some, a State of Mind. What is meant in having a Texas state of mind is to arrive at a place where you can kick back, relax, have a few beers and get far away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday life in the growing cities that about in this country.

One of the very first settlers in this part of Texas was Jacob Luckenbachbec who lived during 1917-1911. He was among a group of German nobility who had hoped for great riches by establishing a colony in the New World. It was in 1845 when Jacob signed up and sailed from Bremen with his family, wife Justina, and two daughters Amalie and Pauline on the brig Johann Dethardt, with Captain Luedering.

On the same ship were Christian Engel, who also made his home in what came to be called the Luckenbach community. Wilhelmina Engle opened a trading post in what later be called Luckenbach. There are two Texas state historical markers that exist in Luckenbach today, but descendants of the pioneer family dispute the accuracy of the marker that stands in front of the present day Luckenbach General Store.

The Brig arrived in Galveston, Texas on 12 January 1846 and Jacob Luckenbach helped win Texas&prime: independence from Mexico. The Bounty and Donation Land Grants of Texas, 1835-1888 shows that Luckenbach was awarded payment for service in the Texas army from May to September 1836 in the from of a land grant.

The town center was purchased by John Russel Hondo Crouch (1919-1976) in 1970 who began promoting its rustic atmosphere. He was the self proclaimed mayor of Luckenbach of a population of three and one parking meter. He brought to life the town′s motto, Everybody′s Somebody in Luckenbach.

His daughter Becky Crouch Patterson now continues in the operation of the General Store that was made famous by her father, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennens and many others who would return to the Basics of Life in Lukenbach, Texas.
