QUIRE NINE: CHAPTER NINE
The Quest for the Need Level

The Chapter Nine Index Go Down go back
MUCH IN THE WAY OF PREPARATION for the journey can be accomplished by first making a serious determination of which possessions are of the need and which ones are of the want.
Except, for items of the need, which are stored in a carefully thought out and prepared place within the burden, the next step is to dispose of all those encumbrances having the nature of want, which so often can be accomplished by simply tossing them into the trash.
Dispose of the Unused
Some one once said to me, If I have not used it in a whole year, then I probably don't need it and should give it away or even put it in the trash.
Yes, and without regret, these must needs be dispossessed of as soon as possible.
And if ever there is a need for a particular thing in the future, purchase it and when you finish using it, give it away or dispose of it again. Always remember, the are just things!
A Measure of Value
Those possessions owned which have a measure of value include, among other things: the keepsakes; the items for later; and the surplus gear.
At times, I find that these include those items that are the hardest to let go of and oftentimes I will just toss these items into a convenient location to store them. This makes me think of the many times that when backpacking, and after going into town to resupply, what I would do with any leftover coins upon returning to the trail after my supply stop in town. Yes, because I did not want to carry the coins, I would toss the coins at the trailhead.
Like the coins lying on the side of the path to town, which have value and can be used by the next backpacker heading into town, these other possessions with a measure of value can be used at at later time, given to someone, or even eliminated.
The Art Form
To find the perfect balance between the want and the need is the aspiration of a wayfarer and for such, this desire to attain the need level has to become a life long ambition.
Thus to attain the need level, the path to achieve this goal is to:
Lessen the Want to near nonexistence and Ennoble the Need to an art form
