The Skyline Drive, Shenandoah NP, Virginia Go Down Go Up
The Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park Information
Always Open
Shenandoah National Park is always open, however, some portions of the Skyline Drive can be closed due to inclement weather. At those times when the drive is closed, visitors can still go afoot into the park.
Visitors centers and some park facilities are open from late March to late November, but different facilities throughout the park have separate schedules.
The Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah
The AT in the national park is a great hike for anyone at any time except during June each year due to the passage of the Thru-hikers during this time, simply because when the thru-hikers pass through any section of the AT, every thing seems to get crowded.
Even so, there are many day hikes and other trails available throughout the park.
Shenandoah Ninety
When hiking the Appalachian Trail, the passage afoot through the Shenandoah National Park was dubbed the Shenandoah Ninety due to there being ninety miles of foot trail through the park. The Parkway, however, is 105 miles in length from US 340 in Front Royal, Virginia to Rockfish Gap on IH 64. Upon crossing Rockfish Gap over the interstate, the roadway continues south on the Blue Ridge Parkway through to the Smoky Mountains national park.
The speed limit is 35 miles per hour and there are some 70 overlooks offering stunning view of the Shenandoah Valley to the west and the rolling Piedmont to the east.
