Nevado de Colima
The Nevado de Colima is the 7th highest peak in Mexico, located in the state of Jalisco, near the border with the state of Colima. It is a long dormant volcano, but attached to its west side (on the other side of a saddle) is a newer, active volcano, named Volcan de Colima (Volcan de Fuego,) which is the most active volcano in Mexico, said to be even more active than Popo.
Nevado de Colima is older and inactive, however, Volcán de Fuego is the most active volcano in Mexico.
Volcan Nevado de Colima National Park
Nevado de Colima is within the Volcan Nevado de Colima National Park, a national park in western Mexico, which was designated a national park in 1940. This park protects the upper slopes of two volcanic mountains that are located near the state boundaries of Jalisco and Colima.
This national park is primitive when compared to those in the United States, as has only steep rough dirt roads which are not passable when it is raining. There is a parking are with some rest rooms and some picnic areas but that is all, which area is above 11,200 feet. From this parking, it requires hiking afoot to the summit of the extinct volcano.
This park covers and more than 25 square miles (65.5 square km), and the park boundary which begins at the 10,500 foot contour (3200 meter) encircles the tops of both Volcán de Colima and Nevado de Colima.
