Location
The Rocky Mountains, also known as the Rockies, are a major mountain range and longest in western North America. The Rocky Mountains stretch more than 3,000 miles (4,800 km) from the northernmost part of British Columbia, in western Canada, to New Mexico, in the Southwestern United States.
Located within the North American Cordillera, the Rockies are somewhat distinct from the Pacific Coast Ranges, Cascade Range, and the Sierra Nevada, which all lie farther to the west.
The Rockies are in the states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. Also, the range crosses British Columbia.
The Continental Divide for North America is located along the high ridge of the Rocky Mountains. Depending whether rain fall east or west of this ridgeline determines determines if it flows to the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico
