The Supplements,
Bioactive Compounds
|
|
|
Bioactive compounds are phytochemicals substances found in foods that are capable of modulating metabolic processes which results in the promotion of better health. The health benefits of each bioactive compound varies greatly in foods those that are most abundant do not necessarily result in the best health benefits.
One thing that is certain, bioactive compounds do have a positive effect on the health of a living organism, both tissue and cells.
In the field of nutrition bioactive compounds are distinguished from essential nutrients. While nutrients are essential to the sustainability of a body, the bioactive compounds are not essential since the body can function properly without them, or because nutrients fulfill the same function.
Some examples of bioactive compounds are:
anthocyanins, bioflavonoids, caffeine, carnitine, carotenoids, choline, coenzyme Q10, creatine, dithiolthiones, glucosinolates, organosulfur, phytosterols, phytoestrogens, polyphenols, polysaccharides, prebiotics, taurine and tocopherols.

The Bioactive Compounds:
Anthrocyanins

|
|
Anthrocyanins and Proanthrocyanidins
Anthocyanins and Proanthrocyanidins are chemical compounds, belonging to compounds called polyphenols and a subclass called flavonoids. These compounds are found naturally in a number of plants, especially fruit and flowers and give them there blue, purple or red colors. These compounds, polyphenols and flavonoid are a class of compounds with antioxidant effects.
Other names include: anthocyanidin, anthocyanadins, anthocyanin, celphinidin, cyanidin, delphinidin, malvidin, pelargonidin, peonidin, petunidin, proanthrocyanidins.
The best source of these compounds is red and purple grapes. Grape skin contains polyphenols, including anthocyanins and leucoanthocyanins. Grape seeds contain proanthocyanidins.
Anthrocyanins in Foods
Example of fruits and vegetables containing anthrocyanins include: bilberies, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, cranberries, eggplant, plums, prunes, purple grapes, raisins, red apples peals, red beans, red beets, red cabbage, red grapes, red onions, red pears, red wines, strawberries.
Grape skin contains polyphenols, including anthocyanins and leucoanthocyanins.
Proanthrocyanidins in Foods
Sources of Proanthrocyanidins include: bilberies leaves, birch, ginkgo biloba, grape seeds, pine bark
Grape seeds contain proanthocyanidins.
Benefits
Proanthocyanidins have shown to be a very powerful cardiovascular antioxidant which help to reduce the risk of heart disease.

The Bioactive Compounds:
Bioflavonoids
|
|
|
Citrus Bioflavonoids
These are powerful polyphenolic compounds found in lemon, limes, oranges, grapefruits and tangerines.
Bioflavonoids serve to protect cells from free radicals which can compromise many cellular functions. Among the many attributes of Bioflavonoids is their ability to support a healthy immune system response, and to promote the maintenance of a healthy vascular system.
Bioflavonoids must be taken with vitamin C for optimum benefits.
