The Herbs and Spices, Basil
What is Basil?
Basil is a culinary herb of Lamiaceae family, also known as the mint family, and is used in worldwide cuisines. Basil is native to tropical regions from Central Africa to Southeast Asia.
The name basil comes from the Latin basilius, and the Greek basilikón phytón, meaning royal and/or kingly plant, possibly because the plant was believed to have been used in production of royal perfumes.
In the French language, Basil is sometimes referred to as l'herbe royale meaning: the royal herb.
Basil is native to India and other tropical areas from Africa to South East Asia. However, Basil has now become available worldwide due to human global cultivation.

Basil Description
Basil is an annual, or sometimes perennial, herb. Depending on the variety, plants can reach heights of between one and five feet (30 and 150 centimetres). Basil leaves are glossy and ovulate, with smooth or slightly toothed edges that typically cup slightly; the leaves are arranged oppositely along the square stems.
The leaves may be green or purple with its flowers small and white, which grow from a central inflorescence, or spike, that emerges from the central stem atop the plant. Unusual among family Lamiaceae, the four stamens and the pistil are not pushed under the upper lip of the corolla, but lie over the inferior lip.
After insect pollination, the corolla falls off and there are four round achenes (or fruit) develope inside the bilabiate calyx.
