A WAYFARER′S WORK
Noisy Jet House, Oak Harbor, Washington

The Noisy Jet House, Oak Harbor, Washington
The Pressure is On
Saturday, 18 July 2020, Oak Harbor, WA.
(Day 697 TG) 55°F. 6:30 am, sunny
When I begin work here at the Noisy Jet House, I climb up onto the roof carrying a pressure washer and begin the work of pressure washing the roof of this mobile home in preparation for rolling on a new coat of Silver Seal sealant. Joann tells me that the roof has not been sealed for several years.

The 2020 Journey, Noisy Jet House: Pressure Washing
Today begins what will take then next four days to complete. When I finish the work that I will do during these four days, what will be left, will be to roll sealant over all the seam repairs I have made and over the rest of the mobile home roof up to the edge perimeters. The manufacture′s instruction says to apply at 320 square feet per five gallons which will require two five gallon cans to cover this roof properly.

After my first day of work, I finish the roof, stop and wait for the next day to continue with the pressure washing on the outside walls.
When I arrive the next day, I set up the ladder to repair damage from a tree-fall done to the front deck cover. Next, I get right to work on the pressure washing of the walls.

Since the damage to the edge of the roof covering is relatively minor, I choose to just straighten the metal rather than replace it.
Then, after all the pressure washing has been completed, I next climb up onto the roof and begin the hard part of the job, that is the surface prep work.

The 2020 Journey, Noisy Jet House: Roof Prep Work
Like any old mobile home that I have worked on, after you clean the roof and before you roll on the roof sealant, it is necessary to prep the roof first by removing all of the existing loose sealant with the use of a hand scraping tool. This, methinks, is the hardest part of this job.

The 2020 Journey, Noisy Jet House: Sealing Roof
Sealing Edges and Seam Repair
More hard work, still on my knees and brushing the new sealant on the roof edges and the four rear seams. But, not only hard work but very messy as well because it is hard keeping the silver roof sealant off of my hands, clothes and shoes. For the most part, I am able to keep the sealant off of my hands by wearing gloves, however, they are so stained with sealant that when I finish today, I just throw the gloves in the garbage.
I carry my broom and the materials up onto the roof. Then I use my broom to do a thorough sweeping before beginning with applying the sealant. Opening the can, I spread the sealant around the perimeter, coating the edge of the mobile, after which, I begin to apply the sealant to the seams, cutting strips of the repair tape, pressing the tape into the sealant over the seams and finally apply more sealant over the tape.

When this workday comes to an end, methinks, I will need at least one more week to recuperate from this travail.
I complete my portions of this job, clean up my tools, put away the material and trash and then drive back into town with my whole body aching.
