THE RAILROAD HOUSE
2016 Journey, Concrete Restoration

The 2016 Journey, Railroad House Concrete Restoration
What Did the Friend Find?
After their friend inspected the concrete, he said that all the loose concrete would have to be removed, then the holes and cracks filled with a high strength concrete repair mix.
Futher, to prevent the damage from reoccurring, all the low spots should be raised to create better water drainage.
Three low area were identified, all in the entrance walkway between the street steps and front porch.

The 2016 Journey, Railroad House Entrance Walkway
The walkway from the street to the front porch had both cracks in the concrete and three low spots that filled with water which only worsened the cracks. The worse of these low spots was at the steps which lead down from the sidewalk along the street. This low spot would be corrected by removing the bottom step entirely with high strength concrete. Thus by raising the entrance sidewalk to the level of the first step, the water would no longer pool at the bottom of these steps.

The 2016 Journey, Railroad House Front Porch Steps
The Front Porch Steps
Two more low spots are located at the bottom of the porch steps and there are also some major cracks in the walk way on either side of these steps. Both of these low areas will require extensive repair work before the top coat is troweled on.

In both of these two areas, all loose concrete will first be removed and all of the existing cracks will need to be widened, chipping away any and all loose concrete in order to make the repairs stronger by allowing more of the high strength concrete to be inserted into the widened holes.

Right Side of Porch Steps
However, the right side will be treated much like the upper steps, in that I will fill in this step, leveling and inclining the concrete downward across the front of the porch steps.
Since the high strength has a thickness limit of zero to four inches thick, I must make this repair in several sections. Pour one four inch section, let it cure, then pour the next, doing this until the hole area is filled.

The Fountain Walkway (Right Side Walkway)
Waiting for this first layer of concrete fill to cure allows me to begin work on the next area of this project, after which, I continue my work on the right side walkway.

Seeing that the first layer of fill has cured, I mix and pour a second layer by the front porch steps.

Here, I am working on the walk way that continues around into the side yard. Later, I will trowel a thin layer over the entire surface area.

The Driveway Walkway (Left Side Walkway)
Eventually, after completing the rest of the walk ways, I move my tools to the driveway and begin working on the final section.

Throughout the years of my time of working for a living, I made it a practice of completing the hardest part of any job first and saving the easy part of the job for last. This is exactly what I have done here at this job, the Railroad House concrete repair.
Here, along the Driveway Walkway, there are only a small number of cracks, and only one that I could call really bad. So this part of the job does not take very long. After only a couple of days working on this area, the driveway walkway is done and I take a few final photos of the project.

Methinks, it is time for me to drive to a hot spring to get some soak time.
