THE DESERT HOUSE
2016 Journey, The Restoration

The 2016 Journey, Desert House Restoration
I arrive in Hemet early in September to first do a move out cleaning of a rental for Richard and Kim. Once the Palm House is cleaned, the tenant in the Desert House is moved to the Palm House.
It is a good thing that this tenant has so very little possessions, just her furniture, clothing, cooking utensils and a few other essentials. It only takes Richard and myself a few trips using his trailer to move her into the Palm House.

Then, on September 28, 2016, I begin work at the Desert House, first to clean the home after moving the tenant out and then to remove all of the old flooring.
Replace Carpet with Bamboo
All the old carpet is pulled and then the padding is removed. Next, all the tack strips are taken up and all damaged subfloor is repaired. Finally, the new bamboo flooring is installed.
After nearly one month, working about forty hours a week I have completed the flooring. The following photos are those taken during this work.

Removing the Old Flooring
The first thing to do is to pull out the old carpet, pad and tack strips and as I pull out the old flooring, I roll it, tape it with duct tape and stack it in the back yard for easy removal.
After a couple of day, the carpet and pad are all stacked outside and the tack strips are broken up and in the trash container

Then I cut out all water damaged pressboard sub flooring and replace it with plywood. I also paint the old black heater vents with white paint. Finally, I sweep the sub floor and then paint it with some leftover wall paint.

Installing the New Flooring
The instructions on the new bamboo flooring says to cut open the boxes and allow the flooring to breath so as to acclimate to the temperature and humidity conditions of the location to be installed.
Also, I have noticed that the various lighting at different times of the day change the look and color of the flooring.

While the flooring acclimates, I install the new pad, taping it to the sub floor.

The Kitchen and Dining Areas
Since the dining, kitchen, and laundry are wet areas a different type of pad is used. This snap lock style floor will also be glued along the connecting edges so as to waterproof the flooring and prevent any water spills from seeping through.
Too, the several layers of vinyl flooring presents a change in the surface level, so I decide to remove the vinyl flooring before installing the bamboo.

Cutting A Window in the Kitchen
Kim had requested that the wall between the kitchen and the living room have a window cut with a bar where several could sit to eat a meal that she is preparing. I though this was a really good suggestion but I had no idea how much it would open up the entire home.
Before installing the kitchen flooring, I completed the window cutting and refinishing the wall under the window.

The Master Bedroom
The master bedroom crosses the rear of the home with the closet and dressing table on the west side. It also has a door into the bathroom.
